If you liked the first game you will like this. If not, you will hate it.
It's very much the exact same game and the combo weapons make it a bit more fun and manageable as they last longer than normal ones. Still not a fan of having such strict time limits on a game that begs for open exploration and still not having any checkpoint system (not auto saves, mind you, as that wouldn't work with this game obviously) that lets you restart when you die after accidentally walking into a psycho battle is pretty fucking dumb. But whatever, it's still a lot of fun in its own weird way.

I just got to the motorcycle battle, which was amazing (blowing through hundreds of zombies and drifting all over the place) until the other dude showed up and knocked me off of it and I couldn't find it anywhere.
I like the electric guitar weapons!
If you loved the first, it's a perfect sequel.
If the first annoyed you, this definitely won't change your mind.
+ 3 Save spots allows for a little more experimentation, but save locations are still far enough apart to make death feel consequential (and you can always limit yourself to one slot if you preferred that).
+ Escorting survivors requires much less babysitting, give most survivors weapons and they're valuable wingmen, rather than the largely useless hindrances they were in DR1.
+ Weapon combos are a fucking awesome addition.
+ No damn respawning convicts.
- Psychopaths are still ridiculously cheap and relentless, fights can turn sour in a snap, especially early on.
- Vehicles are very hard to come by, the car in Royal Flush and the Hummer in the strip are all I see as far as heavier stuff goes and you cant just hop in, they cost a bajillion dollars to unlock. I unlocked a few motocross bikes from a psycho fight but you can only use them in the strip and they're positioned where you have to go out of your way to get to them. There's some errant golf carts lying around but they're pretty fragile.
- Mannequin torso got nerfed hard.

This was the worst, since you can't even do anything to the guy while you're on the motorcycle (other than try to ram him, have the bike explode and die). And the fight itself is obviously the same ol' charging bull runs into the wall and gets stunned fight... but trying to stand in one place against a wall with a million zombies around, waiting for this asshole to actually decide to charge directly at you just might be the worst thing ever. I eventually just gave up and first tried to get him to bug out and get stuck on a railing while I hit baseballs at his face, but he eventually got unstuck at which point I said fuck it, I don't have time for this (which was true) and ran back to the safe house.
But I really do like the game. It's especially nice to go into the game knowing about the time constraints and just going with it instead of being horribly confused a frustrated like the original.
From what little time I had with DR1, I really liked the concept of it - the open areas, all the hidden stuff, the grindy Dragon Quarter-ish Restart Game +. I wasn't too thrilled in execution - some of the fights were blah, some items were a little too hard to come by, clunky controls and camera...then again, I only rented it. My guess is some of the satisfaction between DR1 and 2 comes from repeated play and learning how to steamroll areas later on.
Just beat it. That fight just before Overtime was HORSE SHIT. Uppercut that takes you down to 1 flashing hitpoint no matter how much life you have? Get AIDS.
I found the most useful attacks in the game are the Defiler's jump attack and, later, the 'hold X' attack once you get its combo card. Defiler is Sledgehammer + Fire Axe, there are fire axes in the safehouse and a sledge in the hallway leading out of it into the mall, so it's easy to grab the materials to make two every time you go to and leave the safehouse, which you'll do often.
From what I've seen, this is a pretty surprisingly faithful sequel. And I didn't expect it to be!
I've only fought Bathroom Dude, but it was a cool fight. If the bosses are overall harder than the first, it will make up for the easier escorting.

Totally marathoned this game this past week. Got the S ending on Friday and I am still playing it. Hit level 50 and trying to get all the Achievements. Everything is 20 points--it's maddening! The game is not perfect but I really enjoy it--being able to "equip" magazines so they don't take up an inv slot and a persistent item bank would be my primary wants for sequels.
