So, I watched this movie about a Texas cowboy... well a wannabe cowboy... who gets up and moves to New York to be a gigolo. He quickly blows his money and runs into a crippled con artist. I thought it would be cheeky and fun! And high jinks would pursue!
But it's not.
It's horrible and distraught. Nothing goes right -- exactly as it would. But you learn to love the guys. And in the end, they finally make it to their dream, but before they get there, one of them dies. So you feel shitty about it. And you hate it.
It wasn't what I expected. And there's poorly shot flashbacks and terrible 60's acting by some of the supporting cast. But... Dustin Hoffman is incredible, and the realism of the situation is heartbreaking. Over all, it's practically amazing. Not to mention, the only X rated film to get an Oscar. Anyway...
Not a movie to watch drunk and expect to laugh.

When he's getting gone down on by a guy in a gay porn theater, you just know things aren't looking up for the guy.
This is a great movie. Dustin Hoffman does an amazing job as well as John Voight. You can't help but feel pity for them. When they move in to that condemned building you just get the feeling everything's going to go downhill fast.
The bond they create with each other is so parasitic but also a very deep friendship because they have absolutely no one else. I mean, when Joe Buck calls home that one time, he calls the dishwasher or short order cook at the diner he worked at for Christ's sake.
The party scene is one of my favorites. Of course it really dates the movie, but that was the Factory time period, so if it was a period piece made today, it'd be pitch perfect still.
This is also one of the better showcases of NYC in film.
One of my favorites. Good choice for a review!
