This is incredibly arguable. I spent some time studying the dropping of the bomb and there are strong arguments for both sides. There's evidence to show that Japan was possibly close to surrender as well, along with evidence that it was not necessary to drop a bomb on a populated area, just showing it's power might have been enough. On the flip side, it is also quite possible that Japan was not going to surrender, and a land war would have been unreasonable for us to get into. Along with that, continued firebombing would have actually been far more devastating to Japan than the two bombs were.
And there's more beyond that. It's not cut and dried we had to drop the bomb/we should not have dropped the bomb. Anyone who states either of those as fact has no idea of the actual history.
