We could, but it would only create an alternate timeline, and SkyNet's still going to win anyways

On the flip side, it is also quite possible that Japan was not going to surrender, and a land war would have been unreasonable for us to get into. Along with that, continued firebombing would have actually been far more devastating to Japan than the two bombs were.

And there's more beyond that. It's not cut and dried we had to drop the bomb/we should not have dropped the bomb. Anyone who states either of those as fact has no idea of the actual history.
I believe that certain factions in Japan wished to surrender but several military leaders did not. A ground war in Japan would've been bad so in that light you can justify the dropping of the weapon. In another light you see an already defeated Japan and a shattered economy. If we hadn't come up with the bombs we probably would've been better off taking all Japanese positions outside of Japan itself.

Also, in response to a previous Biffaloficus post made earlier...I still don't know what you're talking about. When did I ever say the atomic bomb was developed for usage against the Japanese or the Germans? The war with Germany was already over before we even had gotten heavily involved and Japan was beginning to shrink shortly after Pearl Harbor.

I think the Biffster is referring to the fact that the race to nuclear weapons began before WWII and it was a matter of developing it before our enemy did. The war certainly wasn't remotely over when both sides got the idea to pursue atomic bombs and actively did so. Germany eased off when their resources started getting strained as the war progressed.

This video sums up 3/4 of TNL. People like to ignore reality in their arguments and instead focus on Candy Land.

Sure, but I don't ever recall us talking about this stuff anywhere in the thread. I said something about the Germans still being doomed to defeat if they had come up with it first during a particular time period and that's it.

    Not really. You wrote:

"Ummm, I believe that Germany was defeated before we even used the bomb on Japan so whether we had developed it or not really has nothing to do with Germany in WWII."

Do you really think we would've put as much emphasis on finishing it if Germany and World War II didn't exist? I don't think so. The real point here was the amount of science and money dedicated to finishing it in a short time so that our enemy didn't finish it first. There's really nothing similar about that and developing Fusion power first or at all.

I was just responding to what Biff wrote, I was never really involved in the fusion power argument that was going on with you and Frog.
