I believe that certain factions in Japan wished to surrender but several military leaders did not. A ground war in Japan would've been bad so in that light you can justify the dropping of the weapon. In another light you see an already defeated Japan and a shattered economy. If we hadn't come up with the bombs we probably would've been better off taking all Japanese positions outside of Japan itself.
Also, in response to a previous Biffaloficus post made earlier...I still don't know what you're talking about. When did I ever say the atomic bomb was developed for usage against the Japanese or the Germans? The war with Germany was already over before we even had gotten heavily involved and Japan was beginning to shrink shortly after Pearl Harbor.
