Thread: Man of Steel

  1. Superman's pretty gay, dude. You see dudes usually wearing their briefs outside their tights? Dudes who get called "boyscout" a lot?

The Donner films are valid for what they were, which is pretty absurd flicks starring "a version" of Superman. I still kinda like 'em. There's so many versions of Superman running around the funnybooks (author to author, really), you can't really say one thing IS SUPERMAN AND THAT'S IT DOOD without being a little goofy about it.

The comics never had a "Kneel before Zod" moment that stuck with me as much as the one from Superman II.

  2. They've kind of locked down certain aspects of his character though. In a lot of ways, mentally, physically, emotionally. Stuff that Returns was just like fuck that shit we don't care about it. I was never a fan of the Donner films. I hate Margo Kitter, with a burning burning passion. She was a horrible Lois, and what's his name just wasn't a very good Superman either.

    Hmm...can't argue with that.

Personally, I like the Donner films a lot. The problem with Singer's movie is that he took all the worst aspects of them and mixed in some dumb shit of his own. No one wants to watch Supes crying about Skeletor...I mean, Lois Lane. They want to see him use a skyscraper as a baseball bat against some other super-powered dude.

Gymkata: I mean look at da lil playah woblin his way into our hearts in the sig awwwwwww

  4. JPV: I appreciate that, but a lot of your 'locked down' character is still a composite of a bunch of older Supermen from various media. I'm sure there's aspects from the old radio serials that were incorporated into the comics over the years, even.

And Dole, I do agree. The best part of that whole movie was when the needle broke when they were trying to hook an IV into his arm. It completely missed the point of the spectacle on the bigger things.

Can you read my mind ?
Do you know what it is you do to me ?

I don't know who you are,
Just a friend from another star.
Here I am like a kid out of school,
Holding hands with a god or a fool.

Will you look at me quivering
    Like a little girl shivering.
You can see right through me.

Can you read my mind ?
Can you picture the things I'm thinking of ?
    Wond'ring why you are
All the wonderful things you are.

You can fly you belong to the sky,
You and I could belong to each other.

    If you need a friend,
I'm the one to fly to.

If you need to be loved,
    Here I am.
    Read my mind.

Did... Did you just say Christopher Reeves was not a good Superman?

He only had the best portrayal of confident, awesome Superman and mousy, awkward Clark Kent of all time. Of all time.

You're absolutely right there. How ever I think there are somethings that have been aspects for awhile. Definitely more so physically. Though I think one of the things that has been there since day one is the characters confidence when he is Superman. I felt like that was really lacking. The secret spying on Lois, not the actions of a confident man.

Seriously. That was the one thing those movies got so right that it almost didn't matter what else they got wrong. (And boy, was there a lot... all you guys saying you're sick of Lex Luthor are wrong, because you haven't had any Lex Luthor yet, just Lex In Name Only.)

Sorry, that's simply not true. Go read some Superman Archives, maybe the first volume or two, and make a movie starring that character in a modern setting. I'll pay to see that cocksure sonofabitch kick ass in a heartbeat.
