how come special effects in the 80's, early 90's are better than today.

Because 80's and 90's special effects forced a certain amount of effort out of you to achieve even a mediocre effect, therefore you may as well put enough time in to make it extraordinary.

Such an effect now can be achieved by spending 2 hours in front of a computer with a box of devil dogs, so fuck it, it's good enough.
