It seemed pretty obvious that he was. True, it is never explicitly stated, but with the subtext and some of the choices Downey makes with the character it is clearly intended.

  2. He clearly abused substances. It wasn't overtly written in to his character, but I think most adults would have caught it.

  3. I noticed little tell-tale signs here and there, but most of them could have easily been chalked up to his just being a weirdo and not a coke fiend. I think if you guys didn't know anything about the character going into the flick, you probably thought he was just eccentric (except for maybe the scene where he re-enacted the Satan-worshiping ritual- I think he was on some good shit there).

  4. and the point in the film where he sniffed his fingers, closed a case, and put the case in his pocket.

  5. Was that the scene when he was investigating the bathtub murder and found the secret room?

  6. No. It was at the house. He wakes up from Watson coming in. They talk and when the camera pans back to Holmes you see him sniff his hand.

  7. There was a marathon on TV the other day of a bunch of old black and white Sherlock Holmes stories. They all had a gunfight.

In one of the very early Holmes stories, Watson is reviewing his notes on Holmes, and describes him as an expert boxer and swordsman. Good movie, btw, for the reasons already stated.

While not quite UFC, in one of the stories Holmes is recognized by a bouncer like character, mentioning that Holmes was one of the few people to knock him out. I also remember them saying something along the lines that if he kept with boxing he could have had the title. He's supposed to have a wicked punch.
