I just started this, any quick suggestions for abilities and items to buy first? There's a shit load of stuff to buy and it's all pretty expensive. I don't want to miss a clutch item that'll help me out a lot.
I was playing as Jeanne and accidently overwrote my save file for Bayonetta where I was nearing thirty hours, and had most stuff unlocked. Now I'm rushing through the game very quickly. The Alhiem portals are going to be a bitch to do again though.

The accessory that puts you in witch-time whenever you get hit is a helpful starter, but it will build bad habits. The one that sets bombs off whenever you dodge is probably the most all-around useful (but will hurt your scores), but the one that gives parry ability is probably the best (and most fun).
I found all the power activation accessories to be either underwhelming, or drain magic too quickly, but YMMV.
As for abilities, most are just for fun, but top utility goes to:
Bat Counter (mitigate damage, witch time)
f,f+P (Stinger equivalent)
f,f+k (air, rising/diving kick)
b,f+p (knockback or giant slice w/ sword)
Thanks.
I borrowed this game for the holiday. God, it is so great. I really liked both Devil May Cry and the Gungrave games. Shit, I've even taken the time to beat crap like Legion and the FF7 Vincent game.
This game does so much right. It reminds me of the first time I played DMC on the PS2. And I love all the little nods to other games.
After playing a glut of bad-to-mediocre action games, Bayonetta is starting to look pretty good. This game is so far beyond Castlevania: LoS.
Bayo is $20 on Amazon, shit I need to get on that.
Anywhere cheaper BTW?
pawn shops.
maybe used at gamestop?
It's currently $18 used at gamefly. The wife managed to get it down to $9 thanks to a sale and a coupon.
Ha, funny this was bumped, cuz I was planning to post about it.
I almost finished this yesterday....almost. The final battle is beyond ridiculous to me, and exemplifies everything that I've grown to dislike about Bayonetta; I don't think I can bring myself to finish it.
The biggest culprit for me, however, is the camera. So many times my view of Bayo became blocked by scenery or enemies or all the pyrotechnics flashing around, so I can't pull off a dodge when I need to, or be sure what enemy I'm targeting.
When I can see what I'm doing, I've become very good at stringing combos and using the dodge offset. But I end up using too many items and continues, so I get Stone after Stone....my time and combos are usually silver/gold, but my damage is always always Stone.
In a game that's demanding and technically proficient, it's upsetting that I have so much trouble seeing enough to avoid getting hit so much. The parry accessory didn't help much because it's hard for me to see which direction attacks are coming from, and the bat-damage avoider technique didn't work for the same reasons.
Part of it's my own deficiencies: I can't differentiate consistently between a button tap and a button hold, which often equals death. I also just can't seem to get the necessary timing down when things get really hectic. DMC3 SE I can handle; Bayonetta's a bit much.
I respect the game a lot, but it's just not my thing. If my view wasn't obstructed so often, I'd probably have a lot more fun than I did.
