Surprise! It's a gimmick. I enjoy the depth of field/Viewmaster kind of look, so I don't mind it, but don't feel I have to go out of my way.
Inspired by some of the comments in the Up thread, and as well as a compliment to my Imax thread.
Just like Imax, is this really worth the extra money?
I have seen the following movies in 3D:
- The Polar Express (Imax)
- Superman Returns
- Beowulf
- Aliens of the Deep (Imax)
- A movie about Africa that I can't recall the name(Imax)
- Coraline
- Up
Out of all these movies, the only one I think really benifitted from the 3D was The Polar Express. A movie that I would normally give a 3 out of 5 to, but the 3d + Imax combo bumped it to a 5 out of 5. That movie has a lot of scenes in it that are designed like a rollercoaster with a lot of movement that looked great in 3D.
Everything else though didn't really blow me away, I am starting to think that I am done with this, I could've just as well of seen them in normal 2D and saved a couple bucks in the process.
The current 3D technology is really good, especially compared to the old red and blue style, but I don't like how they desaturate the movie you are watching, especially with something as bold and colorful as a Pixar movie.
The only live action movie I saw in 3D was Superman Returns, and that looked like dog shit. Has anyone seen a live action movie in 3D, like Journey to the Center of the Earth or My Bloody Valentine? How do they look?
So, do you really like 3D or is it just another gimmick to get people into theatres?
It's really no different than putting buzzers under the seats and saying the Tingler's been let loose in the theater. It's a gimmick.
Like I said in the Up thread:
How can 3D be a gimmick when we naturally see in 3D?
It's like calling stereo sound or color pictures a gimmick.
yes.
So is running water and those motorized beasts on four wheels.
referring to wheeled warriors of course.

I think my Bloody Valentine did it pretty good. It never really felt like a gimmick. I can't wait to see Up in 3-d.
I personally find it depends on how the 3D is handled.
Something like Nightmare before Christmas in 3D was absolutely AMAZING! Instead of stuff coming out towards you, everything was set back. Like as if the movie screen was just a window into this world. Instead of stuff coming out towards you (which when it hits the edge of the movie screen it loses the 3d effect) everything was just set back, and it was AMAZING.
If More movies did things that way, and just set everything back away from the screen, OMG I would see every fucking movie in 3D. Nightmare really was just stunning in how it did it, god it really was like just looking into this magical window into another world.
