Thread: Metroid: Other M

  1. Im pretty sure theres a 3 in there which kinda goes for my point. And a shit load of areas in 1 looked like that too. Remember where you fought Ridley? So you know what I mean bro.

    I love this.

I was talking to mechdeus about it last night. We want you to be able to team up with other bounty hunters, but you have to buy them gifts first to curry their favor. Also there is a pool where you hang out and try on all the pretty things you can buy.

I mean, how do you expect them to show exploration in a trailer? And how do you expect them to do it in a way that makes the trailer visually interesting? Just because it wasn't shown in the very first teaser trailer, designed to let the world know that the game exists, doesn't mean it isn't in the final product.

People (not just you) really seem to be raging a whole hell of a lot over a trailer that barely shows any coherent gameplay, and are drawing a whole lot of conclusions about what the game will and won't have. At least wait until we actually know how the damn thing plays before declaring that Team Ninja is making Ninja Metroid, abandoning exploration and raping the character of Samus. We have yet to see or hear anything of substance so you're going on a stylishly-edited trailer and a whole lot of cynicism.

I don't recall writing this shit in stone. We're on a discussion board, and I'm discussing. We've got only a video and a dev studio for now, and I'm discussing what I see. If some car company announced a brand new sports car and showed only a video of a seat that looks like it belongs in a mini van, I'd say about the same thing.

You seem to be under the misapprehension that a statement of someone's impression of a video is somehow setting their opinion for it, forever. As I said, if any revelations come a long, fantastic. Until then, this game can fuck right off. Perhaps I should only say nice things about videos I see until I can actually play the game. Because that's not the same thing at all.

Some things I can guess from the video:

There will be dialog (frequent? who knows).

The combat is new and different. Maybe that is the focus of the game, or just what they chose to focus on in the video. My guess, it's the new focus of the game.

If there are any expansive, multi-faceted areas in the game, they sure as shit weren't interested in showing them. Most of the battles and areas seemed to focus on boss arenas/fights, so this is probably skewed.

Look, Metroid is always near the top of the list when I think of either favorites, or best evars. I've always been attached to the feeling I get when I sit down to play it. Playing the first game way back when was such a different experience. It wasn't the bright and cheerful palette of whimsy that every other game was. It didn't focus on badassery and machismo. It's haunting tones were unlike any other video game music, and conveyed nothing but melancholy, isolation, and detachment. It asked the player to be careful and methodical, while also forcing quick reflexes and action game skills to be tested constantly. It forced you to memorize (or at least write down) it's world, and so become more absorbed in it.

You say that I should hold my qualms about the game until I hear more. I'm saying that this video is how they are presently choosing to represent the thing, and nothing regarding what I love about Metroid is there.

I don't understand the positive reactions, or the quibbling. I'm willing to say that this looks like a lot of fun and could be interesting. It just wont be Metroid.
It's no biggie, it's just that you said you didn't understand the positive reactions or the quibbling but then you proved that you did understand both points by saying that the game looks like a lot of fun (positive) but also that it won't be Metroid (quibbling).

I'm gonna have to look at this as being in like a parallel universe to Metroid and I believe that's what they want us to do, being as it's subbed "other M". I am gonna miss the darker isolated adventury feel of the series though. Hopefully this will have some of that or hopefully future games will return to that.

There's Samus punching an alien in the face and flipping out and shit in 1993.

    No parallel universe.
