Ebert likes it because of the hard sci-fi trappings, and The Onion A/V Club is that section of the site that seems like it is also jokes but is actually completely serious somehow.

I haven't seen even the trailer. I'm going in expecting nothing. I don't even really like Ridley Scott's films that much. If it sucks I'll say so.
But one observation seems to be that people were expecting to nerdgasm over Alien like they just nerdgasmed over comic books with the Avengers and it's just not that movie.
On its own merits, good first hour, descent into stupid for the duration. Surgery scene is rad, some really nice hard sci-fi trappings to the whole thing.
So bad, SO BAD as an Alien movie. Between the whalien and Voldemort... Jesus.

It's a good movie on its own. As a tie-in to Alien, it fails. It answers next to nothing, and the few ways it functions as a direct prequel to Alien...it's just not satisfying.
I enjoyed it, but at the same time I kinda wish it was never made. I prefer the mystery generated by the first Alien as opposed to the tiny bit of goofy quasi-Alien stuff they put in here. They either should have tied it directly into the first Alien or just gone COMPLETELY off in another direction.

It's not just that. There's some basic storyline issues and glaring plot holes as well.
So super hero movies get a pass for that shit but this one doesn't?
