Thread: The Hurt Locker

  1. The Hurt Locker

    Jeremy Renner
    Guy Pearce

Getting great reviews. Any LA/NY TNLers going to check this one out?

  2. I've watched it few months back and liked it. Its not an action film, as many seem to think, but more of a drama and character study of members of bomb unit in Iraq. There are some good and tense moments, and the pace is great, but don't expect gun ho version of Point Break.

Few big name actors pop up through out in small cameos and Lost's Kate there as well, being more of pretty furniture, just like on Lost

    Overall, decent flick.

  4. I'm sick of select theatre releases. Between this and Moon not coming to my area for a while (if at all) I may have to download them.

  5. I saw this movie recently. Question for anyone else who watched it:

What was your interpretation of the 'Beckham kid' subplot? When James finds the kid's body, his colleagues don't believe it's the same kid from the concession stand. Does James know that as well? When he sneaks into the house outside of camp, did he just give up, knowing he took his baseless pursuit too far? From that point of view, it mirrors his recklessness in the scene when he ends up shooting Eldridge in the leg, then succumbs to guilt in the shower. However, if he truly believed it was the same kid, why did he leave that house and sneak back to camp without investigating further?

It's just a strange and risky subplot, since it's riddled with incongruities (James was a soldier that managed to sneak off the campsite of a warzone, holding an authorized concessionaire at gunpoint, then sneak back to camp with the consent of several soldiers-- I can't say it enough, none of that could possibly happen in real life, especially without reprisal). Under most circumstances, I can excuse a movie that fudges facts for dramatic effect, but I'm just wondering if there was anything else from that entire subplot that I missed.

  6. I saw this awhile back.

Couldn't help think how awesome it would have been if they made a Minesweeper videogame themed movie with the same theme.

There was a lot towards the end of the movie that just felt unclosed. My guess is that the movie was a bit ambitious and in order to get it all done and printed, some things either had to be left unshot or cut. It is a great movie, great idea, and I really enjoyed it, but I think it would have been better as a mini series that could have devoted more time to different events.
