  3. Yep, I need PS2 shooters, this seals it. Not big on buying import systems so I guess I'll be buying and modding a US one :P *-neo

  4. Wow. Looks slick. I still have to say I'm more excited about Ikaruga, because it's more "new" (I don't like sequels), but I most definately want to check it out.

My main beef with DDP was that despite being an awesome game, it was exceedingly generic. But the formula still works, and I'd put the game in my top 5 shmups anyway.

Generic, my ass. DDP is one of the shmups that redefined manic shooters. Tight gameplay, perfect level design, and a balanced sense of pure white knuckle intensity.

And on another note, anyone notice that in Giga Wing and Mars Matrix, some of the bullets are literally ripped off from DDP? MM has the SAME neon multicolored and blue ring shaped, ect. bullets as DDP. The icecap level in MM where you destroy giant cruisers as small ships shoot blobs of bullets at you from the side is totally ripped from one of DDP's levels. Looks like there are some Cave fans working at Takumi.

  6. First, they're not the same. Secondly, there's really only so much you can do with a blob of a few pixels.

They have some employees in common, it would seem.

And if DDP is so generic, name me another (non-Cave) game like it.

  8. I think by generic is that it imploys all standards of shooters, but doesn't do very much that's new. You've got your basic ship, you've got your powerups, you collect bonus points, you have a couple fire-straight-ahead variations, and you pretty much just shoot up and dodge. There's not too much it adds to the genre in any sort of twist or variation (not to say it adds nothing, bit on that in a sec).

However, don't take that wrong, that doesn't mean it's bad, as DDP is one of the greatest shooters ever. But much like how SMB is generic now (you run to the side, you jump on enemies, that's the game. Hell, they had in earlier games, but it wasn't as good), that doesn't take away from how much damn fun it is.

By the same token, I do love how it does super-shots. My favorite part about Cave shooters is how tapping allows shooting on the move, but holding down allows slower movement for dodging, now that's the ingenious part that I love about them.

  9. Bless you, Arika. Bernard, thank you a million for sharing the news with us.

DoDonPachi is not generic at all. What it does may have been done before, but it does it really well. DonPachi was the first game to have the Get Point system. One interesting thing on DP & DDP- you can keep your finger on C to continuously rapid-fire your shot, then hold A down to fire the laser as needed (A overrides C). That comes in handy against some of the Charlie Foxtrots you will witness later in the game.

One nice thing is the Aura Shot. When you are lasering, there's a small aura around your ship- and anything that touches it takes grievous damage.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
