Thread: Console Deaths and Error Messages

  1. Console Deaths and Error Messages

I have a Japanese GameCube that has been modded to play domestic releases. Recently, while I was entering a room in Resident Evil, the screen switched to an error message that advised me to turn off my GC and check the owner's manual. The system was locked on that screen. A day or two later, the same thing happened with the same game.

I also noticed that the Cube clicked a little while loading rooms. It wasn't loud, Zip-Drive-like clicking, but it was audible. I believe the clicking only comes after extended play, since I was not consciously aware of it before. (My living room is not too quiet, even at night.)

This morning, about four-and-a-half hours into an Eternal Darkness session, the FMV sound stuttered ever-so-slightly two or three times. I thought the unit might be overheating, so I saved and exited.

Back in 2000, my 9/9/99 Dreamcast began to refuse to load games. It would stay on when there was no disc inside, but whenever I tried to load a game, the unit would switch off. It started when I was not able to connect to the Shenmue site using the Passport disc that came with the game. I opened the lid, and when I shut it again, the DC turned off. I snapped the lid down slightly, but I don't know if that was a factor. Generally, I baby my consoles and games.

The DC also completely froze on Omikron: the Nomad Soul, but who could blame it for that? ;-)

Who else has experienced console lock-ups or deaths with the 128-bit systems? List your experiences below. I accidentally left my Genesis on overnight with no ill effects, but what would happen to the Cube or PS2 in a similar situation? And why are lockups becoming an issue now?

I find it interesting that the GameCube has a professional freeze screen. Is that part of the strategy to combat unit overheating? What other error messages are hidden in the next-generation systems?

  2. I had my very first lock-up two nights ago. I was playing FF9 on my PS2, and was walking around Lindblum, picking up some supplies. I left the shop and as I was exiting the next screen, the screen went blank and there was no sound aside from a hushed swishing kind of sound. The sound was definatly comming from my TV, and the PS2 just sat there giving it's all to try and load the information. I let it go for a few minutes, hoping, but eventually turned it off.

    Haven't had the problem since.

  3. My 9/9/99 has been refused to load games sometimes; I usually have to try a few times before it works on some games but other times they load right up...

Just out of curiosity do you have a Nintendo GameCube or the Panasonic one?

  4. The majority of my problems have come from Sony products. I take extra care with all my consoles, but I still went through:

    1-Launch Day psx
    1-non-launch psx

and now lauch ps2 has started acting wonky.

Other than that, the only other problems I've had is I wrecked the cart slot on my original Saturn because I was doing the 4-meg/st-key swap getting Xmen vs. Streetfighter to work.

  5. "Wonky." What a great word!

  6. ...

Well, I've had a Sega CD version 2 die on me, but my model 1 version I bought at launch has been flawless.

My PSX model 1 won't read certain games--especially ones that use all of the CD (most of WD's ones) and ones that are especially shiny. But otherwise, no console problems. I've played my DC an unbelievable number of hours with no problems yet.

Gamecube has been great too. PS2--no freezes yet, but I just got it at Christmas time.
"50,000! You scored 50,000 points on Double Dragon?"

  7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 would lock up on my PS2. Mostly when a level was about to start. Also, Jak and Daxter would refuse to boot up and I would have nothing but a blank screen when I inserted the DVD.

After beating DOA3 in Story Mode the other day, my Xbox gave me a blank screen instead of the ending cinema and the credits.

  8. Tron's Xbox froze playing JSRF the night we got it but has since been fine.

My converted JPN Cube bad some odd audio issues one night a while back playing SMB, but they never returned. Also, it seems to be operating awfully noisily while playing ED, but maybe I never noticed the noice while playing games that have, y'know, music.

I once left my PSX on overnight in my attic room during a Jersey heat wave, and after it recovered, it worked fine and never gave me a problem.

Needless to say, I was pissed.
