Hey all - no idea on the general consensus of DOTA type games.. but I'd not played them before and am enjoying this clone.
Anyway, been playing them long enough to score some beta keys.

Dota is a mod (i think?) for warcraft 3 where you play as a hero character and fight other hero characters. Its like Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance minus the gameplay. The majority of its awkward gameplay is spent clicking away from enemies until you level from some fighting trees that you don't even control.

The premise is that 'creeps' issue from each others bases down 3 'lanes'.
These creeps help you level up and get money which you can upgrade your hero's gear with. Each lane has 6 defense towers. If you assist your creeps (by kill the other creeps and Heroes) your creeps can basically make it to the towers and in to the base and destroyed in the 'World Tree' type item in there.
Anyway, the maps feature ways to gank other players, tomes of invis/haste/double damage, other neutral creeps which give you more exp and money etc.
Each hero has 4 skills, which can be upgraded up to 4 times.
The majorly played level is a 5 vs 5 level, with 3 lanes.
It's not for everyone.
