I hope we never get to the point where college is primarily to prepare people for jobs. Yeah, I managed to get a position that is otherwise for college graduates only, and was able to make a comfortable living at it, but there was still that nagging sense of missing out.

While I can understand where you are coming from, a large percentage of people aren't cut out for university level work. It would be more beneficial and cost effective focusing on a specific skill that they will be able to gain employment beyond the minimum wage bracket.
When it comes down to it, how may people do you know that have a bachelors degree and can't gain employment in a related field because the job market just isn't there?

college only serves one purpose
animal house style shenanigans
My point was that those people are threatening to drag down the university system to the level of a glorified vocational school. There was an article a few months ago about how yet more traditional courses are being eliminated. We are already losing humanities courses to the "politically correct" bullshit classes; I just don't want to see further cuts so we can teach Cletus how to rebuild an engine in a "diverse" environment.
College should be for exploring ideas. If you don't want to do that, leave.
