Are the fans investors? You making a statement like that makes me think explaining the rationale of corporations is hopeless. The fans have no financial interest in NBC, so why are you bringing them up as some litmus test?
Getting to the issue, though, Jeff Zucker probably shouldn't be in charge. I'm not arguing it's a good decision he remains. He may have political ties in the company, or they plum don't have anybody brighter to replace him. Do you really think business is so black and white that there isn't heat on him to be gone? There are so many interpersonal relationships, bad history and other issues in a corporate settings that lead decisions in a certain direction. He hedged his bets on ideas that didn't pan out. That's different than maliciously harming NBC through business practices against its interest (it could be argued Leno should have never been taken off the Tonight Show because of his high ratings. But it can also be argued Leno's 60 and can't last forever. In that regard Conan should have been seen as a longer term investment. They just needed to give him time to find his audience and expand his creative -- which is what I think most people believe). NBC has been in the toilet since 2004 when holdovers Friends & Frasier went off the air, 3 years earlier than Zucker taking his top position in 2007. So it could be argued he was handed a shit storm and has managed it the best anybody in his position could. He handled the Thursday night skew of comedies well and launched Heroes, one of the more popular shows on NBC in recent years (even though that show is balls).
So NBC has been losing money since the middle of this decade. It's like the show Chuck getting renewed for a 3rd season. Do you think Chuck had a chance in hell of getting renewed when NBC was #1? But now that the network is in the shitter the not-so-hot ratings of Chuck are the best they can hope for. It's better to have an established show you already sunk money in to on for an hour every week than sinking another 25 million in to a show that might be just as bad or worse.
Zucker may suck donkey dicks. But he may be the best they can hope for right now. And if you don't think he's in the hot seat right now you're wrong. Also he could have inked a lucrative contract with NBC, so paying him out may cost them a couple million they don't want to afford right now (ESPECIALLY if the alternatives are not much more attractive). Business is fluid. It's not black & white like people tend to make it out.
