Thread: James Cameron's Avatar

  1. Aladdin actually had an awesome story - and Starship Troopers, while in a genre that is known for camp, wasn't bad either. Both of those movies actually hurt your point. And Rumble in the Bronx sucks.

Going straight for the throat: I defy anybody to tell me the story in Commando was not horrible. I defy anybody to tell me that Commando was not amazing.

Watch the scene that defines the movie - 2000 dudes with a clear shot at Arnold failing to land a single slug while he exterminates every one of them - and tell me that was driven by the story.

Edit Commando to replace every single act of violence with a single unceremonious shot to a bad guy's head and tell me it wouldn't be an awful movie. The story stays exactly the same. All you do is edit the violence to be as quick and uneventful as possible removing all spectacle and related one-liners. It sucks then, right?

  3. I can't believe your argument is that "Story doesn't matter".

  4. I can't believe you have no reading comprehension. I said:

    Some movies are all story.
Some movies are comedy and story together.
Some movies are gore shock fests.
Some movies are an excuse to string together soft rock song n' dance numbers.
    Some movies are people fucking.
    Some movies are 'splosions.
Some movies are 'splosions with a story.
Some movies are fucking with a story.
    Some movies are "ooohhh pretty".

    Get it?

Story CAN be one reason a movie is awesome. But no way does it have to be.
Wooaahhh there fella. Aladdin had a damn fine story, awesome songs, and great characters. I haven't seen Rumble in the bronx so I can't comment on it.

A movie like Commando, while not the strongest story has some damn awesome characters. Something Avatar lacked with its cliched beyond cliche characters.

IMHO you have to give viewers something more than "well in 3d it looks cool". IMHO and I think most people will agree, that needs to come from the story and the characters. Something that Avatar painfully lacked.

If the only way to enjoy a movie is "in 3d at the theater" or some other bullshit like that, then yeah its a horrible movie.

Here I'll update things for you.

    Story and Characters are king.

Arnold movies are a genre that is above criticism. You really can't use them to back up any sort of argument about anything except other Arnold movies.

  8. According to Gizmodo they have sold 6.2 million copies of this on Blu-Ray since it came out.

    I will never understand.

  9. Mike Judge understands.

What's so hard about understanding? It's a classic story by a director whose main skill is making movies that are readily accessible to mass audiences.

I liked Avatar. I don't think it was at all special, but it was an alright movie with some truly cool visuals and a 3D gimmick. I hated 3D going in to the movie, and came out understanding it can actually be a visual treat when time is taken to produce artwork that is meant to be seen in it.
