Agreed. Watched it twice, 2nd time is even better.

  3. I liked Inception.. but the Total Recall mention in this thread reminded me of a time when a complex, ambiguous concept in an action movie didn't require an hour (at least) of droning exposition. I wish this movie was directed by someone else.

It happens to me all the time. ALL the time, well at least I wake up, and I am in my room (the tricky part is, it could be any of the rooms I have ever lived in), and then I go about my day as if I had just woken up, except dreamy shit starts happening blah blah eventually you wake up for real or you wake up for fake again. The thing is, I don't think my brain is simultaneously storing both dreams as it seems to in the movie, I think your brain is just taking a train of thought and starts at a new point, and goes from there. Seems much easier for the brain to manage.

I don't think the brain is storing the prior dream state either, but Nolan's mythology treats our brain like a computer in that respect.

Yeah, this seems obvious. I even do things like watch TV in a dream, and then the TV show becomes the dream as I forget the "Watching TV" premise. I even have dreams where I'm not in them, sometimes. It's just the brain sort of spinning off in a new direction based on a thought starter.

I know some people claim to have dreams with very detailed plots, but I think if you were actually able to record them, you'd find they were incoherent, constantly fabricating new continuity as the old falls out of mind. My dreams will often shift setting or premise randomly and I'll never notice unless I wake up and think about it.

But you can't make a very good movie out of that.

I can get behind this. Nolan does some things well, and some things... not so well. Droning exposition is a big problem for him.

It really feels like they could have gotten a lot of concepts across in the opening sequence if it had been handled better. Instead, they spent half the movie trying to get the audience up to speed (see: Juno's character)*

Felt kind of like Wantanabe's character was maybe meant to be the audience surrogate, but someone was like "Hey wait a second. He's asian."

Total Recall is just the best movie maybe of ever. It's hard for anything to stand up to it.

  10. The abridged script!

Hey dawg, I know you like to dream, so I put a dream in your dream so you can dream while you dream.
