Thread: Sonic The Hedgehog 4

  1. Yeah but damn dude they're not that different. Mario has the same floaty jump in all his games it even made the transition to 3D. I don't know i just don't think people who think Sonic 4 is good actually ever played the Sonic games that made Sonic a household name to begin with.

I played a shit-ton of Genesis Sonic as they were being released, and pretty frequently throughout the years since. I think Mzo hit the nail on the head here. Sonic 4 isn't Sonic 2, nor is it as good as any of the Genesis Sonics, but it's not as terrible as this thread makes it out to be. In the board's defense, if your opinion of Sonic 4 is based solely on the XBLA demo, which is only the first act of the first world, then I understand why you have such a negative opinion of it. The full game is better than the demo and it's a shame Sega wasn't able to convey that.

  3. What the fuck is wrong with the physics engine in this game? It takes Sonic forever to get going on the ground and he stops immediately in mid air. It's like... he has some kind of momentum and weight when he's on the ground, but when he's in the air it's the opposite. Obviously they knew something was wrong so they added in the totally unnecessary air homing dash, gotta' keep moving pussy ass move. Christ... And why the hell does Sonic keep coming out of a spin? You have to constantly hold down to keep him from standing up again.

Correction: He has no momentum... anywhere.

I'd would buy 10 more Sonic games if that were real.

Also: kind of tired of hearing what Sonic is supposed to feel like. I don't think SMB feels like SMB3, SMW, Yoshi's Island, Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy 1/2. Every one of those games feels pretty different from each other and are all individually excellent mascot platformers. Why does every 2D Sonic game have to be a clone of Sonic 2 to even be acceptable?

Yes, Sega is not quite up to Nintendo standards when it comes to these games, but that's always been the case. Who cares? Stop videotaping yourself letting go of the controller like a faggot.
some people are just fans of sonic 2. Not 1, 3, SK, CD, or Chaotix.

I really wouldn't be surprised if the people who don't like this game for being different are the same people who bitch about how different the level design was in CD, or how much knuckles plays different than sonic and the impact that had on level design.

  5. Fundamentally I agree with Mzo, Mario games have diverted wildly from tradition and are still mostly celebrated as good games. However it's also true that Sonic has pretty much done NOTHING but divert since the Adventure games. Sonic 4, with its old Sonic tropes everywhere and numbered entry is clearly an attempt to please the people who DO go around claiming what Sonic should feel like. The problem with this, and the problem with his divergent games has nothing to do with fan expectations. They are just poorly made, buggy, ancient mastadons of game design.

Look, quality is subjective, and I'm not saying you can't like the game, but you seem willfully oblivious to a couple points:

    1) The mechanics in this game that are changed, specifically major issues with the roll and the momentum physics, are THE gameplay elements that defined Sonic when it came out. Now, not everyone used these mechanics, just as not everyone that played Street Fighter II performed combos, but they're a crucial element for many people, moreso for the diehards.

    2) These mechanics that were changed, were not changed on purpose. Unlike, say, Sonic Rush, in which the developers made a decision to change the physics to make the game even more speed oriented and the changes actually served some kind of vision, Sonic 4's developers said repeatedly that they were trying to replicate the physics of the original game, but they failed because they are bad at making games. These changes have no advantages, they are bugs.

As a sequel, Sonic 2/3 is to Sonic 4, as Cinderella is to Cinderella II. You can stick a kid in front of those shitty direct to video Disney sequels, too, and a lot of them will be entertained, but we all know it's not the same caliber of project, nor will it satisfy a die-hard fan.

    Because Sega is retarded now.

And Geen, NONE of this shit that people find so offensive is different in the later levels. It has nothing to do with level design, and everything to do with not being able to play it like a Sonic game.

  7. Look man if you liked the game more power to ya. Just don't try to tell me it's a good Sonic game bro. Just like Mario's floaty jump Sonic is supposed to be fast and almost kinda slippery. Neither of those come across in this game.

  8. There is some serious business in this thread.

  9. I just hate the animation. It's so stiff and lifeless. Sonic looks like he belongs in a flash game.
