And I know you hate portables, but Gradius Galaxies GBA is worth having.
Do you really need me to bring up Fantasy Zone II DX for the 8000th fucking time Yoshi? It's the best hori since Border Down, just buy it.
Also don't by Last Hope, it's really bad.
Yeah, it's the new thing to pad out the compilation, the rest of which is pretty good too (especially since you don't have the original FZ either). Lotta game in there for not a lot of money.
Oh yeah, since you're a PC man, it's worth mentioning that it emulates very well, too, except for Super Fantasy Zone (which has a timing issue in emulators). Quick fix if you don't have a modded/import PS2 handy. You do need a very good CPU, though.

Speaking of PCs (well, computers in general since the term "PC" has been co-opted by Wintel), you should play Apidya and Uridium 2 on Amiga. Apidya is somewhere between Gradius (which is where it takes its powerup system from) and R-Type (which is where the level design philosophy comes from), with absolutely stunning presentation. Uridium 2 is somewhat similar to Fantasy Zone, but really really fast.
Not mentioned, but worth taking a look:
X-Multiply (for Saturn or PS as "Arcade Gears" release)
also 3 Wonders has that hori shooter (Chariot) which is pretty enjoyable (also available as an Arcade Gears release)
I am hoping all of the worthwhile 16-bit stuff makes its way to VC, as I just refuse to go back and deal with the carts at this point. Good calls though.
