Tartantino and Rodriguez are still the Tarantino and Rodriguez of today. They've got that niche well covered.

  5. The niche of enflaming internettians?

  6. Not really. They both came on the scene with relatively low budget action-y fare. Where's the El Mariachi or Reservoir Dogs of today? Shit, even Desparado was a "cheap" movie that looked like it had a bigger budget than it did.

  7. Shane Carruth, Jody Hill, and Jared Hess?

  8. Primer was cool, I've heard good things about The Foot Fist Way, and Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre can suck a dick.

  9. Napoleon Dynamite was cool until The Foot Fist Way did country humor 10x better.

Auteurs seem to come in waves. The NY guys in the seventies and RR&QT in the nineties. We'll probably have to wait a few more years before some really cool low budget shit comes out. *cough* *cough*

Guy Ritchie was kind of that guy for a few years. There are still a lot of good low budget crime films now, but as far as someone who's made a big name for themselves I can't think of anyone.
