Thread: The death of independent cinema.

  1. ... Edgar Wright? Kind of?

  2. Yes! Edgar Wright! I would like to retract my list and replace Jared Hess with Edgar Wright!

  3. Does Spaced count as low budget? I guess it does.

  4. Zac and I met Edgar Wright. When asked if he'd do a Western next. He said, supposedly, their first movie was a western and it didn't get distributed.

He would not give me a copy.

EDIT: also SotD and HF both had budgets simular to Desperado and he's not a music video director coming out of the Studio system, so I would count him. Also I met him, so I'd count him.

EDIT2: Did I mention I've met Edgar Wright?

  5. Danny Boyle is probably worth mentioning too. While not quite indie indie like Reservoir Dogs, even his recent stuff like Slumdog Millionaire was made for like 15 million with no big stars, so that's pretty ballpark on with Pulp Fiction in its day.

I mean the thing with Pulp Fiction and Desperado is that, we call them indie/low budget, and they were, but they were like 8-10 million dollar films. Their budgets were comparable to a lot of "studio" action movies in pre-CGI days.

  6. Danny Boyle and Guy Ritchie, I both consider to come out of the late 90's school of filmakers (with Wes Anderson and Darren Aronofsky). Danny Boyle just continues to make breathtaking films where Guy Ritchie fell off after Swept Away.

  7. I'd say Jason Reitman, but I don't want to get my shit stomped.

  8. I wouldn't call Desperado low budget, just a movie that looked like it had a lot bigger budget than it did. Like District 9.

  9. I find it hard to call yourself independent when your father is Ivan Reitman.
