Thread: The death of independent cinema.

  1. I'm saying it's a constant, it's not just that it's a 'before or now' thing. It's THE thing. Now it's just happening to movies you know about.

edt: see, now stealth edit and we're on the same page. let's go skip down the street.

  2. I hate you.

Life During Wartime opened up a second screening at the New York Film Festival and I just got a ticket, though, so now I feel a little better.

  3. Frog, I just can't say you movie guys have it bad right now. At least not in the ballpark of "bad" that us music guys suffer through.

Movies aren't overtly fatiguing to your sense of sight yet. Get back to me when every movie without exception pegs every pixel between 230 and 255 because brighter is better and nobody wants to be the dark movie...and every single motion is digitally corrected to unnatural perfection...and every single costume regardless of genre is a leather boob pusher-upper. Then I'll have sympathy.

For now be grateful that you can look at the screen without squinting while every song I buy grinds my ears down at any volume.

You don't need a million dollars to make a kick ass album though. If no one's doing it, it's their own fault for sucking so hard, not because no one believes in them.

The problem with music is quite the opposite, I think. There's so much available that there's no way to sift through it all. Finding good music is a full time job.

  6. What the fuck is Yellerdog talking about?

The entire cinema model is going through some scary changes. Movies rarely stay in theatres for more than a month and a half as a half assed means to combat piracy, and the silver screen is becoming more of a stepping stone to DVD rather than the main focus.

Independent cinema will never die completely as its really the only way to get into the industry as a director, aside from directing music videos. I'm hoping that after a few major flops the studios can't afford to make so many shitty block busters and decide to buy and release some independent films as a means to cut costs.

Instead we have directors too lazy or not skilled enough to shoot an action scene properly so they violently shake the camera and zoom in. The DP just increases the contrast and puts a yellow filter on everything. The writers get virtually the same two dimensional characters with the same relationships and dress it with a different theme (inexplicably-attractive-nerdy-guy meets way-too-popular-to-be-seen-with-him girl who for some reason decides to hang out with him and they fall in love and kiss at the end while the black guy says "DAYUM!"). The soundtracks are a mix of top 20 bands and unoriginal orchestral score, and all of the sound is maxed out just like in those awfully produced albums you hate so much.

  7. What the hell are YOU talking about?

That's a good point. You'd think lower budget movies would be seen as a good low risk investment with possible high yield potential, if only the bad special effects movie wasn't such a sure thing. If just a couple of them bombed hard, things might be a lot better.

That means a couple of you will have to decide not to go see Transformers 3. Is it even possible?

  9. Without deaths, there will be no rebirth.

    I've never seen 1 or 2.
