Thread: Pandorum

  1. Pandorum

I saw this new sci-fi horror release. Didn't hear a whisper about it beforehand. It stars Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as officers on a "seed" ship -- off to colonize a distant world -- who wake up from deep cryo sleep wondering where they are, why the ship is busted, and where the hell the 60,000 other passengers are. It turns out that they're not entirely alone, and what ensues is a pretty compelling blend of horror, straight up action, and a healthy dose of psychological suspense. "Pandorum," in case you were wondering, isn't the name of the ship; rather, it is a syndrome affecting deep space explorers -- starting with jitters and escalating into paranoid delusions and, wouldn't you know it, violence.

Sounds trite, but in fact the movie is pretty decent. The settings in the giant, dilapidated ship are great and the horror/action is pretty well done. Ben Foster (who gave a great performance in Alpha Dog, among others) is a good actor and does a nice job here. Worth checking out, imo, especially for sci-fi fans.
    "Fiends! Animals! Bastards!"

  2. Haven't enough movies ripped off Aliens already?

  3. Well, this one is a good mix of Event Horizon and The Descent. Great atmosphere and set designs. Very spooky, bleak and desolate. We havent had a good space horror flick in a while

Yeah, the story itself is not too original and definitely borrows elements from bunch of other sources, but it worked well in this context. The motivations of the characters made sense, and I liked the take on what happened to the ship and origins of the creatures.

Pace was great, and moving at the great speed.

I agree that Ben Forster did quite a good job, as tech thrown this crazy situation, trying to regain his memories, survive and save the ship. Quaid did ok with his part, with the twist at the end, which is not too hard to guess before it actually revealed.

Neat creature design done by Stan Winston studio, and plenty of gory kills/feeding moments. Action bits were also nicely done, and I liked how they 3 man tag teamed one of the creatures, and the fight against the leader.

Its not the oscar worthy material but as far as space horror fare goes, I liked it alot and definitely recommended.

  4. I was thinking of going to see this as I enjoy the sci-fi horror genre but it really didn't look THAT special. I have an idea for a story I'd look to do someday (you know, if I actually ever get to make real movies) that seemed somewhat similar to this idea.

It seems like it borrows from Aliens and maybe Event Horizon a little bit, but everybody gets their ideas and inspiration from somewhere and that's not a bad place to start.

  5. I forgot this was even coming out, looks like most people did.

  6. Didn't look all that interesting.

  7. It looked pretty dull, I don't tend to trust anything with Dennis Quaid in it.

  8. Except The Parent Trap

  9. Far From Heaven is pretty good and I've got pretty high hopes for Enemy Mine.

But yeah for the most part I am a firm believer in the Dennis Quaid factor

  10. they wouldnt screen this for critics, plus its a september release, so that usually means stinker

heard the acting and atmosphere wasnt bad, but the directing was atrocious.
