You should really play DKC again. Graphically, it hasn't held up well at all and kind of looks pretty bad.
2D HD sprite games can be beautiful, but they are also much more expensive to make than 3D ones. Hence the reason this, and I assume, Sonic 4 are taking the 3D approach.

Kev, I don't get the point you are trying to make. Gradius looks better than Bionic Commando by leaps and bounds. Yeah yeah, particle effects lighting resolution whatever. BC is still one of the ugliest games I've ever seen in my life.

Perhaps devs should start making new 2D games in 320x240 again. 1080p hand drawn is too expensive, and low budget 2.5D looks like ass. Just give us some fancy scanline filter and make XBLA look like a Neo Geo on steroids.

Not gonna happen. All of these companies are set up for 3D. It's this way or nothing.

DKC looked like ass the day it was released. But the point still stands that in 2010 the new Sparkster game looks significantly worse than average looking 1990's-era games.

So... 2D appears on the DS by magic? Modern devs certainly can and do produce low res 2D.

And look at the results: Would you rather your budget side-scrolling console games to look like Castlevania Rebirth, or Dracula X on the PSP?

    Yes.

    What is Castlevania Rebirth?

The reason to own a Wii.

  8. I'm pretty sure Dracula on PSP has the original non-3D version of that game... its just locked for some dumb reason.

My point is that in the most direct modern comparison I could make, low budget low res 2D looks way better than low budget 2.5D.

So XBLA devs should dump 2.5D for side-scrollers.

Although I don't think Rocket Knight looks terrible by any means, I do agree with this. I'd love to see more original, 2D sprite games and even prefer that they are in low resolutions.
