So I'm playing SMB, SMB3, and SMW in tandem with NSMBWii as I go for 100%. It really is up with its older brothers in terms of fun and challenge balancing out.
SMB - Probably the toughest in terms of overall level structure. There's enough holy shit moments interspersed through taxing gameplay that there's few stages that fit as filler material.
SMB3 - The levels are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay shorter than I remember! Meaning even in a tough level, it's usually just a few tough jumps or circumstances that once understood, can be plowed through. Still World 8 has probably the hardest levels in any Mario game.
SMW - Easiest in the sense that this is where the series started putting secret exits, keys, etc etc as an emphasis over a straight platformer challenge. A big game and can be a workout in some levels, but I think NSMBWii is little more visceral in its challenge than World.
I still don't know where I'd put MarioWii in terms of difficulty. Some stages are a total cakewalk, while others are right up there with 1 and 3. Granted I have like 80-something lives but I've also died way more than I can keep track of. As for multiplayer, I think it changes the focus of the game. On solo I'm in old-school platform perfectionist mode. In multi-play if I lighten up on that attitude it's a blast.
