I've heard some hate for Italian horror on these boards before, but i think that the broad statements came from a place of ignorance, so I've decided to pick a film which shows that there is more to Italian horror than Suspiria and Zombi. Italy was in fact one of the genres main pioneers from the 60's through to the 80's, and along with the more well known titles lie some fantastic gems long forgotten by the mainstream.
Torso
1973, Color
Directed by Sergio Martino
Torso is a really fun flick filled to the brim with boobs, blood and black gloves. It follows a group of college girls that decide to get away to an isolated country villa after a series of sexually motivated murders have taken place around their campus. Its suspenseful, violent and has more tits in it than your average porno.
While it has an air of teen slasher to it, its also an example of my favorite horror sub-genre, the Giallo. Gialli are very stylish murder mysteries that ramp up the violence and the sleaze tenfold. Their plots are often complex, sometimes to the point of convolution, and they often have a twist ending that ties everything up nicely. This movie however is a very straight forward example of the genre and feels much more American.
The DVD is really nice and has a beautifully restored transfer. I think this should appeal to any horror fans and is well worth picking up.
I tried to find a copy of this for my 31 Days of Horror but couldn't locate one. I watched Pieces instead... which is Spanish but fuck it, close enough, amirite?
The DVD isn't available on Netflix, at least it isn't for me.
