Thread: 3D Dot Game Heroes

  1. This game is fun as fuck. A fair bit easier than I was expecting, but a) that's what the other modes/difficulties are there for and b) I grew up playing games like this (or this game, in some spots). I could see giving this game to a 14-year-old kid who has played lots of Madden and Halo but has never played the older Zelda games getting really frustrated with the game, really quick. I am still hoping that there's a bonus dungeon or something where the developers go "you know the dungeons in a game like Wizardry? That shit was TOO EASY." and make players wish they were never born.

Thankfully, my nitpicks with the game (field of depth issues, the camera being TOO DAMN CLOSE, enemies/parts of levels being off-screen) can be fixed by adjusting the options. The only thing I don't like is how the side quests are managed as if they were out of a Tales game (with random NPCs giving random assignments that come and go seemingly randomly, with no real way to track it) but we didn't have any niceties like that in 1985, either.

The references are all over the place; I just don't like how some of them are really forced. I get that it's the entire point of the game, but I don't think one guy in town needs to speak like Dr. Light for one random scene

If it makes you feel any better, turning the text speed all the way up gets rid of that (and why would anyone want to play without it?)

  2. I read that some of the trophies require up to 3 playthroughs to attain. The event ones are especially a bitch to do, because like Dipstick mentioned, they're seemingly random (they're not, actually. But you need a FAQ if you ever hope to do them right).

Aside from that, this game is aces.

  3. I bought this and put it on the shelf for this summer. I figured it was 40 bucks and wouldn't be around in 3 months when I wanted to play it. Looks pretty rad.

  4. The "Select File" music is totally Shiren. Kinda weird how it's an unabashed 95% Zelda rip-off/homage... and then another 5% of just a bunch of other random games.

IOT: this game bores me to tears! I got through the first couple dungeons but now I'm looking for #3 and the overworld is so dreadfully dull, I'm not sure I can go on. Maybe I'm just not in the mood? It's technically solid and I love me some Zelda-ness. I'll try again later.

the gameplay is pure zelda, but there's tons of nods/jabs/winks for all sorts of old 8/16/32 bit games on top of random 80s shit (one monster in a random cave was singing cyndi lauper for some reason)

also I beat this last night, if you get the final shield the last boss is comically simple since the shield will block everything he has that's long-range, and he will not move in close... disappointed I missed a missable trophy but whatever, the game isn't particularly hard or long so I'll get it on pass #2

  6. There are a TON of missable trophies, and unless you use a FAQ the whole way through, you'll never do all the timed side quests on your own.

Don't bother. I gave up around the same spot. It's a dull and uninspired game that is technically solid, but it just goes to show there's more to fun than being "technically solid". Also, it randomly freezes on you, which bugged the fuck out of me. I eventually said screw it, and moved on to other games. No regrets.

This is too much of a recurring theme this gen.

  9. for people complaining that it's too easy: unlock FROM mode stat, because you're not gonna see 2 blue dragons, a cyclops, and a bunch of mini-golems on the same screen in the default difficulty

for the record, one of the mages had already disappeared when I got the screenshot... I wish I had gotten a screencap of the area I went in that had about 15 scorpions and 2 blue dragons (the dragons annihilated me in record time, since there was nothing to hide behind and abuse pierce with)

  10. My girlfriend got this, I played very briefly and figured I wouldn't be too into it. But that sounds fun! Do you have to do shit to unlock FROM mode?

I guess I could always download a save.
