Thread: Darksiders: Wrath of War

    <shrug>

Anyway through the first three bosses now. Does the game end with the Destroyer? Achievements seem to think so.

Anyway, the dungeons get super Zelda-like I suppose, but they're still incredibly straightforward, nothing close to the best Zelda dungeons.

And the overworld isn't really an overworld. I mean, it's connected, which is neat, and you can quick travel, but there's no reason to? There's just nothing to see. All you'd want to go back to old areas for is to soul farm, and each area is little more than a glorified corridor without much going on.

Zelda's overworld is cool because there are all sorts of environmental puzzles/shit to explore/things to come back to with upgraded items. Hearts tantalizing you that you can't get without a hookshot. Hidden bottles to find. The hidden artifacts here are just strewn about your path really.

I mean, this game is so light on the adventuring you might as well call it adventure-free. It's still just a DMC/GoW/NG action clone with zelda-style dungeons. The boss fights are pretty neat I guess. I'll finish the game. It did get better as I went through it a bit, but it just feels so...I mean, eh. I never bothered finishing NG1 or 2 because it just couldn't hold my interest, and I thought this game would have the adventuring shit going on to keep it, but not really. I was just mistaken.

  2. There ARE secrets hidden all over old levels, only reachable with new powers (hook-shot, portal maker, gauntlet). Bunch of chests with extra Life and Wraith Shards, Legendary Armor Pieces, etc).

So, yours is not a valid complaint.

I dont get this constant comparing/complaing to GOW or NG. This game way more adventure oriented than those 2.

    MEH FINE.

knew the hook-shot was coming from minute one.

Doesn't mean I'll enjoy retreading these areas.

  4. Then stop playing, fuck it's just a rental.

Gotta beat it! I'm having fun. Rentals are like 10 bucks now.

Christ what is wrong with you I can't level some accurate criticism at the game? Zeed said basically the same shit.

  6. His sounded as criticism, where yours is more of a whining about the game.

  7. So I just finished the Black Throne area and now I'm collecting pieces of the Armageddon Sword. I guess when I'm done with that it'll be time to finish up the game right?

YUP! I finished this earlier today. Good stuff overall. FYI make sure you activate the Vulgrum locations in each area or its a pain in the ass at the end of the game. Time for Part 2.

Anyway this game gets totally Zelda. And it's pretty long, I'm not going to finish it and my playfile is maybe 9 hours? Nice thing is frequent waypoints so deaths (I've only had the 2) don't set you back much.

Too bad the overworld still blows.
    Pretty decent overall.

  10. Just got it and digging it. The style is definitely Joe Mad - meaning lots of big, overly burly, 90s-era comic books. You can tell the characters were made by him - good in a fun way, but not serious-business character design.

The animation is pretty awesome, from combat to the cutscenes. ESPECIALLY cutscenes - those facial animations are pretty amazing. Kinda gives the game leeway for being so cornball and over the top with its vocal overacting - AT LEAST the animation matches it.

Gotta agree with Cow on the environments though. Kinda open, barren, wide 'arenas' that try to give a sense of exploration while keeping you on a set path. I'm only a few hours in and it sounds like this changes (at least in the 'dungeon parts), so I'm alright with it.

Combat is fun but - like Cow said - there seems to be little advantage over what weapons are used and how well you can string combos. I did get the Harvester weapon and put the attachment that increases souls for destroying environs...and it doesn't seem to make a big difference compared to the sword.

So far I'm pleasantly surprised though! Was thinking this would be a decent time-killer before SSF4 came out, but found myself pouring hours into it without realizing it.
