Did you play Wolf:ET or ETQW? If so, you wouldn't surely believe this game is going to flop if not only for the reason that a majority of the people out there are retarded. If that is the case then we are on the same level, but if you are basing this solely on video and have never played either of their great games, then you sir are mistaken.

    AKA the retards.

I played both games. Wolf ET was popular, but it was also free, and I don't remember ETQW lighting the gaming world on fire or anything (and it might as well not have come out at all on console).

I don't think this game will be successful. Simple as that. My thinking is along the lines of jyoung's but that's just reality. Everyone is playing Black Ops, BFBC2, Reach, and waiting for MW3, GOW3, etc.

As for why I think they will shut down.. that's what is happening to these developers unfortunately.

Also, I don't think people are retarded for not playing a game they don't want to play.

You just keep telling yourself that. There are niche games, and then there are games that excite the average Joe because they are so simple and lack the requirement of having social ability and a brain.

Eh, I think we're in a rare period where the aesthetic 'norm' is so overplayed in a specific genre, and 'not the norm' is so rarely explored, that diverging will actually boost a game's chance to succeed quite a bit. I don't really buy that Borderlands succeeded because people wanted an MMO with guns, I think it succeeded because it simply looked unique.

If there was a glut of me-too projects trying to horn in on off-the-beaten-path style FPSes to replicate Borderlands's success I'd agree that this would fall on its face, but really there's been nothing high-profile attempting to capitalize since (on consoles, anyway) and it's been long enough since BL (with a sequel nowhere in sight) where there's likely a lot of people starved for another thing that's vaguely similar.

I feel the exact opposite. It being a multiplayer co-op FPS is the only reason I and everyone I know that plays it does so, same goes for L4D.

Borderlands (and L4D's) success is because it's co-op, something that hasn't really been around in forever. For a long time playing cooperatively in FPS' generally just meant you were on the same side of a capture-the-flag match, not that you're working your way through a series of story missions. It's actually something that I think console FPS' have been very good for, as games like Halo have helped re-popularize co-op FPS gaming.

Borderlands having outlines on polygon models doesn't really have much to do with its lasting success, as far as I'm concerned.

  6. Oh I don't mean that's all it had going for it. But I think it's what made the initial wave of people take notice to begin with, then they found out how fun the actual game part was and word spread from there. If it had been basically the same game with a generic modern military setting, I don't think a lot of that first wave would have jumped in right away and it would have been a much harder battle for it to gain traction.

But either argument makes things look pretty good for Brink, really.

  7. Borderlands was boring as fuck. This game looks interesting though.

  8. Borderlands succeeded because it's a loot game/level treadmill that has its play mechanics rooted in an extremely popular genre

Which I guess Bacos already said he didn't agree with, but that just means he's wrong

This looks great. Borderlands never hooked me, because Fallout does the theme better, and I am not excited by the art style or the loot bullshit. Hell, when Rage comes out, Borderlands will likely be totally obsolete. On the other hand, this does some new stuff, not just an amalgamation of what other games did better individually.

edit: I think MechDeus nailed it. Co-op is usually an anti-feature to me, because next to no one can develop a co-op game that is also good single player. I haven't played anywhere near as much L4D as I would have liked because of that, and Borderlands is nowhere near as good as L4D.

  10. Art style doesn't make or break the game for me as long as the game is good. I loved Wolf:ET and ETQW, and unless they just did a piss poor job or don't have any of the elements I enjoyed from their previous games, I have a feeling I am going to enjoy this game as well. I haven't played a single objective based mp game that does it better than these guys. Bad Company is close, but the fact that each and every objective is the same put them behind a little.
