Ok, I'm going to be getting a surround sound/home theater system soon (some for of a dolby digital/DTS 5.1), and I was curious as to how PS2 games are with this. I noticed some games have "Surround" in their audio menu, but not all. Am I really only gonna have a handful of games that will support it, and then the rest will be like a TV? If so, that' fine, I was just curious.
Can you give me any reasons or specifics? Will they be surround sound, or just clearer sound from 4 speakers instead of 2 (Well, technically my TV has 6, but you know what I mean).
As far as I know, the only PS2 game that uses 5.1 is Final Fantasy X, and thats only during the FMV scenes. Many games use dolby surround, which is a bit different. Any game with the dolby surround logo was tested to make sure it adequatly uses the different sound channels, or else dolby would not have approved of it.
I noticed that The Bouncer said during FMV as well, and I'm sure there was another game I played that said 5.1... and yes, I know surround is different than digital... just curious as to anyones experience with it. I saw some PSX games, even that say Dolby on it. I heard somehwere too, that there are some DTS games coming in the future (I'm thinking EA Sports).
Metal Gear Solid 2 uses 5.1 audio too, but again, only during cutscenes. I found that out the hard way when I beat the game and there was no sound whatsoever during the ending movie.
So don't think that because your stereo has dolby surround that you can utilize it with standard audio/video cables.
Can't say my tv takes much advantage of the surround and since I don't have a fancy speaker set up it kind of sucks but its a nice feature to have if you get those nifty speakers one day.
The PS2 cannot do in game 5.1 dolby digital. But things sound oh so much nicer running through an optical cable and some nice speakers. I guess EA figured out how to do DTS(another surround sound standard) in game. My question is, why havn't they done it in games like Medal of Honor? Surround sound is nice while playing hockey and all, but it would really kick ass while playing MOH.
DTS takes up WAY more space than Dolby Digital, which is also why DVD movies with DTS sound have less extras, or put them on the otherside/disc. Anyway, why is it that PS2 can't do in game?
