Yeah so I watched the full thing. I completely disagree with you. Mary and Max wasn't a bad film but I also felt it lacked something. I don't know, same way I wouldn't put Princess and the Frog up for the oscar, I wouldn't put Mary and Max up for it either.
    Where I play

Yeah, I know; had he done them then maybe they wouldn't have been so terrible.

You would've had to put down a lot of money to make a significant amount of dough because the obvious choices were favored by a lot. I'm guessing lots of people lost money on the best picture award though.

It was undeniably stand-out for being different. Pseudo-monochrome, stop-motion, and told almost completely through narration without dialog. I thought it resonated emotionally, too. Maybe predictable, but still sad and endearing.

Mark Boal won extra points for Hurt Locker based on the fact that he was actually embedded with the troops and it's drawn from life. The Academy loves a good backstory to an award.

Yeah it definitely was different. I wouldn't deny that, and I wouldn't say it was a bad movie. That said though different doesn't automatically mean better or amazing. It was interesting for sure, I don't know if every aspect of it worked though. Definitely predictable, in a bad way at times, and definitely sad. I'm not sure yet if I agree with you on the endearing part. Again I don't think it's a bad movie, I just don't know if I would put it on the upper end. For me I would have made the Oscar picks be Cloud, Coraline, Kells, Up and hmmm not sure on a 5th.

That's the thing, it's really a small playing field. You gotta pick five, and there's only like maybe 8-10 that come out each year.

I actually didn't mind Princess and the Frog either. It doesn't strike me as any worse than, say, Beauty and the Beast or Little Mermaid, and I like the music a lot more. It's very corporate and nowhere near heyday Disney, but it's on par with 90s Disney, I think.
