Thread: 2010 Award Season

  1. I'm impressed Up got a best picture node. I'm disappointed to see Princess and the Frog up there for best animated. Fucking take that weak ass shit out and put Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs up there. Sony and Blue Sky usually get shafted with the animated feature oscars .

  2. A Serious Man snubbed for everything except the "let 'em all in now" Best Picture? That's too bad, the lead actor (I forget his name) deserved some attention for that. I really don't like this 10 nominations thing in that category, but look at us talking about it like a bunch of suckers.

I really want to see Mark Boal win for Best Original Screenplay and Christopher Waltz get Supporting Actor, but I'm not that invested in the rest. Gabourey Sidibe winning Best Actress would be neat, and I'll be surprised if Mo'Nique doesn't win best supporting, as weird as it is to say that.

It was a fairly weak year for movies overall though. Still haven't seen Up in the Air or Blind Side, but I don't think I really want to. I also haven't seen any of the foreign nominees this year, so I should probably get on that.

Also: Is this the first time we've had an ex husband and wife going against each other? Has to be right? That's kind of neat.

  3. Frog's right. Now, I would agree with 10 noms if it were a year where 10 pictures were worthy. Like the year of The Wrestler and Gran Torino, they could have thrown in an extra nod or two, up to ten if it were a good year. But in a year where you're tossing in District 9?

I actually like D9. But it's like handing an Oscar to King Leonidas. He's awesome, but is it art?

The 10 nominations thing is stupid. If it were 5 it would just be Avatar, Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker, Precious and Up In the Air. Why bother with the rest?

  5. It's a business decision. Slapping "Best Picture Nominee" on the DVD cover is a good way to get attention, and the Oscars have long been criticized for being insular and out of touch. This way they can recognize a bunch of other flicks, even if there is 0% chance they will win.

It's hard to picture The Blind Side as a Best Picture Nominee, but I can't say it was appreciably worse than A Beautiful Mind or Crash or Chicago. Okay, maybe a little worse.

7 would've been better IMO, but I guess their math figured 10 is cool.

  6. Business and politics should never factor into art or science.

  7. I've never given much of a shit about awards such as the Oscars for obvious reasons...it's never about artistic merit, just buzz, popularity, or box office gross. I stopped taking this bullshit seriously the year Cuba Gooding Jr. beat out Edward Norton's turn in Primal Fear. That decision was just nuts.

That said, I am suprised by some of the nominations, especially UP and...District 9?!? wtf. Yeah, maybe the academy's trying to look hip this year. As a big fan of D9, I'm happy to see it up there, even though there's no fucking way it'll win.

So, people consider the big race between Avatar and The Hurt Locker, eh? As I said in the Avatar thread- beautiful movie, great action, solid yet unoriginal story (actually, almost everyone's saying that). Never saw The Hurt Locker, however, but I've heard from some people that it's great and from others that it's painfully boring.

It was an okay movie, albeit one that blatantly busted out every dramatic cliché and trick in the book in a rather overbearing attempt to tug on the ol' heartstrings. Certainly not deserving of Best Picture, IMO.

  8. I hope Crash comes back and wins again.

  9. #29
I really hope Cristoph Waltz wins.

  10. There's really no contest in that category, I would be really surprised if he doesn't win.

    BEST DIRECTOR
    AVATAR, James Cameron

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
    Christoph Waltz, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

    BEST ACTRESS
    Sandra Bullock, THE BLIND SIDE

    UP

    BEST ART DIRECTION
    AVATAR

    BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
    AVATAR, Mauro Fiore

    BEST COSTUME DESIGN

    BEST DOCUMENTARY - Feature
    FOOD, INC

Technical stuff skipped. A mix of Avatar and others.

    BEST WRITING (Adapted Screenplay)

I actually don't know. Between Up in the Air and Precious. In The Loop MAYBE

    --

    BEST WRITING (Original Screenplay)

    INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, Quentin Tarantino

The Hurt Locker has a chance to snag some of the stuff that Avatar is up for, including Best Picture, but I doubt it. People are crazy about Avatar and I still don't get it.
