I think your first mistake was that most of the people that were disagreeing with Yoshi. Were saying that's not ultimately what Iwata and Miyamoto were saying. The second is that some people asked Squall a question and he responded. Whether that sounds Pro-Nintendo or not eh, but if I was asked a question I would answer it. Not giving a FUCK if that sounded Pro-fuckshitwhatever or not.

I do sometimes wonder why the wii has so many completely horrible looking games on it. The box art alone looks like shitty free online flash games.

This is actually a very good analogy. I've never really thought of it that way, but it clearly fits.

  5. It's actually pretty accurate too. I don't think they're stealing a lot of business away from real consoles.

MW2 is a testament to that. Now if we could just keep good series away from the DS...

Dude, that has been the point of videogames since forever and ever. No one needs em and devs/pubs invent new ways to "convince" us that we do. We're such malleable plebes!

That's why I have Joust on ignore and not Yoshi. While Joust posts read as bitching simply to bitch, Yoshi at least demonstrates some critical reasoning to back up his arguements. Sure, I'll disagree about the Nintendo vitriol but it's not gonna ruin my life. Sometimes he even makes good points that give me a chance to reconsider a discussion.

I threw up the Amazon list in here because (a) I didn't think it was worthy of its own thread, and (b) it really did surprise me that some stupid and/or useless peripherals actually outsold some very good games (on Amazon, at least).

    That is all.
    (a) Stop writing in alphabetical bullet points, (b) what the fuck is this shit and (c) shut up.

So we're gonna use MW2 as an example of "hardcore" games being financial behemoths? Man, I thought you knew that:

    a) All blockbuster games sell their best in their 1st day, week, even month. It tapers out bad after that.

    b) Modern Warfare is...get ready for it...the most casual-friendly, highly marketable to the mainstream FPS ever, ever.

I'd argue the only reason the MW series sells well is it's very, very, VERY casual. Regen health? Check. On-rails levels? Check. Arcadey pace? Check. Casual up and down.

It doesn't matter if it can be difficult - Bejeweled or Peggle can be a bitch when they want to too. To me the definition of casual is to strip away the over-complications of game mechanics to make it as easy as possible for someone to step in and learn, not necessarily finish or master. This is why FPS is the most popular "harcore" genre out there. Over the years things like holding multiple weapons, having set health, traipsing through convoluted level designs where a map is needed have all been unceremoniously stripped away, replaced by dumbed-down mechanics hailed as "innovations" to the genre.

Modern Warfare 2 is the epitome of this design direction, coupled with the epitome of the current casual "hardcore" tastes. Swearing? Check. Tons of violence? Check. Something "controversial" manufactured deliberately to be just that? Check. Michael Bay-esque "plot" "drama" and "holy shit, explosions!?" Check. HD so fine it makes the slums of Brazil feel "exotic" and not "downright depressing?" Check and Check. It is the summer blockbuster flim the game industry clamored to make (to be just like Hollywood-only better!), crystallized and ready for consumption.

Is there anything wrong with that? Hell no! I love me some MW2, but I won't delude myself into thinking its more a game or more "serious business" than say, NSMBWii. Both are fun, both are games, and both strive to make easy to learn gameplay their cornerstones, while having very different visual/genre directions.

The day Demon's Souls sells 3.5 mil in a day, or 3.5 mil PERIOD, then you can say the "hardcore" gamers will not ever again need worry about the fad of the casual.
