Thread: This Just In: Nintendo Doesn't Get It

That would be the PS360, no?

When the generation started, I was optimistic about the Wii. I expected to see most games using the classic controller or turned sideways NES style, quite a few light gun games, and little waggle. I thought we'd see tons of PS2 and PSP ports with normal controls, and a decent number of PS360 games with downgraded graphics. But the cynics were right. Aside from the VC, the Wii doesn't offer enough games to satisfy core gamers.

I see two problems with Nintendo and the casuals. First, taking their money away from MS and Sony. Second, the garbage games and controls. I think most of the casuals have been non-gamers, so it really hasn't hurt MS and Sony too much. And as long as the casuals and their games are locked up in the Nintendo concentration camp, the whole thing might as well not even exist.

We could even have separate forums on TNL: Gaming Discussion and Nintendo Discussion. Any posts about Nintendo stuff is immediately moved to the other forum.

If Wii gamers buy Wii Play, Carnival Games and Mario Galaxy, and PS3 gamers (like me) are watching Blu Rays and downloading movies, I'm not surprised. I have quite a few PSN games, but I bet those don't count for the stats.

  3. Does anyone get mad that there are thousands of books in Barnes & Noble that are terrible and they would never read? Do you get upset about there being tons of music and movies that have no appeal to you but are still being sold to the masses?
I understand and agree that there is more crap out now than ever before for video games, and that the Wii & DS are the biggest offenders of this, but our hobby is growing and becoming more of mainstream than ever before. Does anyone feel like there is suddenly a lack of good games coming out? The last three years have alone have had a ton of stellar games and I always seem to hear complaints of, "There is too much good stuff coming out!" Do you fear that every company is suddenly going to go casual and ignore the types of games that we like? If that was the case it would've happened already.
I really just don't get this resentment towards the casual market.

different industries. For you analogy to work, it would require the book and music industry to be good last year and suddenly huge things to change about either. Like I don't know, making the print taste like chocolate or something.

and any time anything does go more mainstream, people do bitch. Go look at anything weeman says about music. And people were bitching about harry potter. About how it was low grade literature.

The only reason the game industry is different is because it has not became static yet. It has not settled on how it will define itself. Books and music have mostly been the same for a 1000 years. And anytime they do change, tons of people bitch.

The main point I was trying to drive home is that just because something has X number of titles doesn't mean that you have to enjoy or even acknowledge all X number of titles. You can very much go to what you like and ignore the rest.

Well if that is what you are sayiing, then you are wrong.

Sometimes things change and they affect EVERYTHING else. Modern country music is an example. I can not think of anyone new that is putting out country music in the same style of that which was produced in the 60s. Even most of the people that are still around from the 60s have changed their sound.

And what have they changed their sound to? Country music with rock and pop overtones. Rock has had a lasting affect on country.

The scenario that Yoshi is scared of, where they were no longer make games he likes is possible. It has happened with other media.

  7. The Wii is like Hardcore Gamer Magazine. It looks like the real thing, presses your nostalgia buttons, then gives you a rolling brownout.

If it happens it just means he became a dinosaur; no one cared enough to make what he likes, and if they did, not enough people cared to support them. If Yoshi only cares about what Yoshi wants, then he already gets that the people who want something else don't give a damn, so when it finally happens he can reflect on when it was his punk kid interests that were crowding the interests of a different group of people and join me in exclusively playing video games from the past.

Or get involved in game design and take an active role in creating what he likes, I guess.

Because there was one way Nintendo could have fucked up the DS but didn't, they're correcting their oversight in its successor.
