While I guess this is hard to apply to the 8-bit generation, I think it's safe to say that Sega's DC output was probably their critical peak. Those games are really well respected.

I hate to pull this argument, but I think you might just have been more engaged in gaming during the 16-bit and 32-bit gen.

I don't think this is true. Genesis games released by Sega in the 16-bit era were just as praised by critics as DC ones. Magazines were giving Sonic games, Shinobi III, Gunstar Heroes, etc. 9/10s.

The thing about SS vs DC for me is that the Saturn had a decent quantity and variety advantage but none of its games except maybe Panzer Dragoon Saga had quite as big an impact on me as the Shenmue games, JGR, and PSO.

Yeah, but so did everything back then, kind of. I mean the average issue of Gamepro from 1991 had no less than 50% of games get a 5/5. A lot of mags had that vice to a lesser extent. EGM even praised Strider 2 when it first came out. And Super Thunderblade.

EGM gave out plenty of low review scores, including ones to some games that are considered classics now (Herzog Zwei, StarTropics). The media did tend to overrate games but I think that's true of today as well.

  6. I have to say I would just about always take the Saturn over the Dreamcast. Not for Sega's first party stuff but for the 3rd party games. While they both have a ton of 2D fighters and shooters, I prefer the ones on the Saturn.

You might be right. But DC certainly did better than Saturn at least in that regard.

  8. I'm not sure it's a function of review perspective having changed over the years as much as the simple fact that a highly competent but derivative and ultimately forgettable game can look good in its own moment.

Like, Prince of Persia 3 got a bunch of good reviews last year and a couple of "maybe it'll get a GOTY nod" type quotes, but a year later it's already largely forgotten, and won't be remembered as any kind of high watermark when people talk about this gen.

Time is the only true judge of what constitutes a classic.

Because its online. Other than that, I'd Pick Poker Smash without a shadow of a doubt

It's too bad Poker Smash has the Full House, that ruins a lot of the easier combos in the game. That's my only gripe. All it does is make the game more difficult, as you have to avoid full houses and flushes while setting shit up, but I do enjoy the simpler TA more.
