Thread: TNL Pub 2010

  1. Ryan, are you familiar with this beer or is it the first barleywine you've had? Was it from this recent release? Vintage?

I would agree the style ages very well. I would disagree that it has to be aged. Unbalanced beer doesn't taste as bad as Ryan described.

I've had plenty of hog heaven, old stock, below decks, horn dog, etc at release that tasted fantastic before aging. There's no way southern tier would let an oxidized/infiltrated beer out on the market. I call shenanigans.

  2. 'Fresh' barleywines certainly aren't for everyone.

  3. Idk if you don't like fresh you probably don't like the style. I participate in vertical tastings on the regular and while there is definitely a change in character, it is a subtle one in terms of style. More "relaxing" imo.

I have some back burners going back a few years. I'll pick up the new one and do a vertical at home this week and do a true test.. Thanks for the inspiration

  4. LOL, sure, no problem. A good barleywine will change in character for up to 5 years and degrade after that. A year 3 or 4 should be markedly different from this year's release.

  5. #2205
I've had fresh, and 3 year old

  6. #2206
I've had fresh, and two year old Backburners. They are fucking radical.

I'm thinking you just don't like the style.

  7. #2207
    yet

  8. I do like the style - I was trying to figure out why Ryan might not have liked it. I doubt it's a storage issue.

  9. 5 cases Nugget Nectar was all we got. And it's gone.

  10. SADNESS. I almost feel bad about using 2 bottles in my oxtail stew but it turned out SO FUCKING GOOD
