Thread: The Dead Thread

  1. He was old as shit and obese. Just a matter of time.

If Obummer really wanted to knock him off he could've done it 6 years ago.

  2. He was quail hunting. Which is apparently illuminati code for "Blood Will Be Shed".
    Boo, Hiss.

Sounds a lot like when the Democrats started the ball rolling downhill in terms of cooperation ~30 years ago.

There is absolutely nothing more important for the Senator I voted for to accomplish in his term than to block this appointment until next year.

The thing that pisses me off is that Scalia and arguably some of his peers should have retired when Bush was in office to avoid any chance of this situation. I get that the job comes with some arrogance, but it doesn't make you immortal.

  7. Nobody is arguing that this Congress invented partisanship, but you have to admit both parties have generally put partisanship aside when it comes to Supreme Court appointments. The obstructionist effort about to go down will not have a precedent in the past thirty years or maybe ever.

No, I was specifically talking about Supreme Court appointments. The Democrats rejected two nominees before finally approving a third with similar timing in 1987-1988. That time period was where our current mess started.

  9. That sounds a lot different than vowing to block any appointment before candidates have even been put forth.

Also, I thought no supreme Court Justice had ever been confirmed in an election year. Right, Ted?

Yes, the time-honored American tradition of not confirming justices in election years for 80 years... except for that time we did... and also because there was no other instance of a justice retiring or dying in office during an election year in 80 years.

There wasn't social media in 1987, so any such vows wouldn't have been as public.

For accuracy, the second of the three nominees withdrew, but that is kind of like splitting the hair of being told to resign instead of being fired.
