I'd argue that trend started with Mega Turrican. Only the first two titles and both versions of Super Turrican really have the wide-open exploration-oriented levels that, to me, define a Turrican game. Not that I don't think that Mega Turrican is one of the best run-and-guns ever made, but I don't think it's in the same style as its predecessors.

Kind of a stretch, but to me, GunValkyrie was about as close to a 3D Ranger X as I imagine we're gonna get. Same initially-awkward control setup, same jetpack/boost kind of platforming. I wish we would've gotten a Ranger X sequel proper...
That pepsiman game just makes me so fucking angry.
