I'm gonna start watching this marathon style tonight.
The season finale was insane. I am surprised that they kept Ashar alive, I guess they need a villain for next season, along with the snake with legs. So bloody....

Pretty awesome season over all. I had my doubts when I first saw the previews for the show back in January, but as soon as I heard I could see Xena get fingered I was in. The buildup to the final episode made the massive explosion of blood perfect for an ending.

Ashar is my favorite character on the show. I am glad Oenomous didn't kill him off. His working knowledge of the players will help the Legatus in avenging the death of all Capua's nobles. They never really gave us a reason as to why they were such cunts to Ashur. In my eyes he seemed to try to contend but they spit on him. Actions justified IMO. He got his. Man this show has balls. Not just literally, I mean. Having Crixis murder Lucretia in cold blood and telling her he'd rather it die than suckle her tit was cold.
I also surprised at the reveal that Doctore is Oenomous. I suppose this show is LOOSELY based on the events of Spartacus and all, but Oenomous was a Gaul (Frenchman). Doctore certainly looks a shade darker then what would have qualified as French back in those days. Minor issue... him not being french doesn't make a lick of difference to the story. Just historically off.
Best show on TV IMO. A show that isn't afraid to slaughter and mutilate its cast on the whim of story.
Honestly I love how they wrote the season as its own contained story, pretty much. If you never saw an episode past season 1 you would be satisfied.

Batiatus was the only one that liked him because of all the work Ashur did for him on the sly. Remember, he was a slave so he was shit in that class system to begin with. Crixus dropped him in the arena (possibly in training, I can't remember) and when he was hobbling around he started working as Batiatus' right hand man. Ashur actually wanted to go back to the arena but Batiatus said no, he needed his "real" talents to work for him.
He was in a tough spot, everyone shit on him so he had to fight tooth and nail for himself. Just so happens that the route he excelled at was being one of the most shady mother fuckers around. He wasn't going to win any friends like that.

Yah, I don't see Ashur as a bad guy. He was in a bad situation and made the most of it.

Next season I hope they explain what he did to deserve so much ire in a flashback or something. He's been my favorite character since fucking up Barca.
What? He may not have deserved what he got, we really can't say, but he is a bad guy. He is the reason Barca was killed and his bitch boy hung himself, he willfully and happily killed a high up politician, and I have no doubt in my mind that if fucking over Spartacus got him ahead in life, he would do it without hesitation. I'm not saying I don't like the character, but come on, the guy is a true asshole.
As for why he was treated like shit, as far as I could gather from the show, Crixis fucked him up when he got in his way in the arena, and because Crixis was a dick, and the champion of Capua, everyone else just followed his lead. Though maybe there is some back story that will show Ashur was always an ass.
