Thread: Hoarding Games

  1. Hoarding Games

I know some people have touched on this, but I can't make up my own mind. Most of the time I want to play a game (that I didn't just buy), I wind up staring at my collection for half an hour before deciding to do something else entirely. I just did it again. Even if I decide on a genre, my brain still locks up. I want to play a racing game...I have like 20 PS360 racers. FPS...another 20 of those. I like each for different reasons, but just a couple more than others. So it's not that I dislike the games (I suppose I have a couple I actually do think are crap). Also I buy games in genres I don't like. Culdcept Saga?

What do you guys do? Do you keep only the top 3 or so in each genre? I want to get rid of the games but I know a) it's a sunk cost, most aren't worth anything and b) as soon as I get rid of it, I will want that game the most. Or do you just not have the same warped personality that I do?

  2. I've been selling off all of my games. Gamefly is the perfect solution. Their shipping is slow enough that when a game comes I'm surprised and I'm not spending a fortune on purchases. I have Forza/ODST for the 360 (since I just bought another system) and 10 games for the PS3. They might turn into a Best Buy giftcard soon.

I have a fuckton of games but I keep the space size manageable because of deboxing/spindling. There are games I keep in perfect condition with the box and instructions but even more I don't. If a game's worth hardly anything money-wise, and I think I might play it again, I'll keep it. Without the box it takes up hardly any space anyway. I don't believe in throwing the boxes in the trash, though. They have all been given away.

  6. It's not a space issue really. I mean sure space is nice but it's more of a "hey I like the part in this game where..." or "this aspect of the game is good" versus "this game is better than the others, do I need this other one around" kinda thing.

You can always give your games away to me Chances are I don't even have the systems they are on.
I tend to horde games for a while, then go crazy and get rid of a ton to get one or two more. Only a couple games tend to come out a year that I feel I NEED to own. And ones that I like I tend to keep to replay later or finish up achievements/100% it or whatnot.

I don't have the "sunk cost" problem because I am extremely cheap. If I'm not sure I'll hold onto a game, I won't buy it at full price. I'll wait for it to drop to the point where it is unlikely to get any cheaper, then buy it. I'll play through it at my own pace and then decide whether to keep it or (more often than not) throw it up on craigslist or gametz or wherever. The money I make from that (generally the same amount I paid for the game) then goes on to fund the next super cheap game I get, and so on and so forth.

I also rent games when I know they're extremely unlikely to significantly drop in price anytime soon but also don't want to pay that much for them, which further cuts down on the amount of games I buy.

Incidentally, I've been looking for Culdcept Saga for a while. If you don't want it, I'll take it. I promise that it won't actually cost you money to sell it to me this time!

  9. I horde games all the time. I'm trying to get better, but it takes a lot of will power. I use to buy games even when I knew I wasn't going to play it right away but was afraid that the title would become out of print and hard to find quickly. I've come to learn that nearly nothing from the last three years is hard to find and, if I don't play a game within the first week that I own it, I'm probably not going to play it at all.
I sell games that either have sat on my shelf too long and the interest to finally throw it in and play it has passed or that I've already played and don't love or have any strong desire to ever play again. It's sick how many games I've sold without fully playing them.

  10. Sell / trade every single one when you've finished it the first time. Trophies and shit are for morons. If you get a game on impulse and don't play it in a month or 2, sell that motherfucker.

Do y'all do so little as to have the time to replay this shit again and again? You have that long of an attention span?
    Boo, Hiss.
