To this day I don't think I've ever seen a FZ cabinet in the wild. I was certainly aware of the SMS game first, and at the time regarded FZ2 as an improvement. But it was the arcade game I really fell in love with when I finally did play it, and then realizing there was no arcade FZ2 (or rather that it was just a rarely-seen SMS port). So it became a sort of retroactive disappointment.

Interesting. I saw quite a few System 16 cabinets as a child, including Fantasy Zone, both in the United States and in Japan. For some reason there were quite a few System 16 boards floating around in Phoenix back then. I can only assume that some local arcade distributor had decided to go long on Sega boards. I saw a couple of 4-player Quartet boards (though to be fair, I'm pretty sure one of those was in Tokyo).

I saw like every other big Sega arcade game, just not that one. I was a big arcade kid, and it's actually the reason I wanted the SMS over the NES (from an arcade perspective in the mid-late 80s, Sega meant cutting edge and Nintendo was old, dated games like Donkey Kong and Punch Out). But never Fantasy Zone. Dunno why.

Looks like it might finally be time to buy Bravely Default. The question is if I should pair it with Pokemon or Zelda.
