It's not that it's the end-all-be-all, it's just that there's nothing to knock it off of the spot it's holding.
Even if you hated the story in AKIRA to the point where you thought it was completely ruined, THAT ANIMATION IS AMAZING. As a movie, maybe it's OK. From a technical beauty standpoint it is undeniably outstanding.

As a person relatively ignorant of Japanese or Asian style animation and its films I don't think this list is bad (Beauty and The Beast #1 though?). It seems kind of like a shotgun list - something for everyone. There is a LOT of big studio 3D on it. That's probably its biggest problem. Then again, Pixar is amazing and Dreamworks only has How to Train Your Dragon on it.

  2. There is nothing amazing about Akira except how quickly it makes me fall asleep. I never got the love for that movie. I don't even buy your argument that the actual animation is amazing.

  3. I don't even understand how you consider it an argument. The animation looks outstanding.

  4. It looks like a Hanna Barbera project.

  5. Now you're just being a stubborn old mule.

p.s. Yogi bear is amazing. The biggest asshole in the animated world other than maybe Woody Woodpecker.

    Wow. Incorrect, sir.
I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.

  7. I think that Tokyo Godfathers deserves a place on the list. Maybe Perfect Blue too? And The Secret of NIMH. And An American Tail too. And I've always really loved Lady and the Tramp so I'd switch something out for that probably.

It's not top-25 material, and it isn't nearly as good as the best episodes of the show. I'm not sure it's better than Return of the Joker, even.

I didn't like Akira when it came out. There's some nice visuals (though I don't think the animation is all that personally) and some of the effects are good, but the movie it self is boring and painful to watch. It put me to sleep the first 3 times I tried watching it.

The actual animation really is not all that OMG amazing. Some one started saying this and everyone just agreed with it cause they didn't know better.
