You're both being stubborn old mules. The animation looks really, really good and you really, really don't remember anything about it besides, "OMG AKIRA, EVERY NERD KNOWS ABOUT IT, I HATE IT!" You haven't seen it outside of 10 years ago when you watched it on that old VHS you recorded off of SciFi channel anyway.

I pretty much agree with this list, obviously everyone has issues with something. My biggest thing? Not enough Don Bluth. Especially Ferngully. Hexxus alone makes that movie. First time ever that I actually rooted for the villain.

Really? Because I had never heard of Akira when I first saw it and thought the animation was pretty amazing.

I'm not saying its shit. The effects stuff is really fucking good, but a lot of the character stuff is just alright, I'll give you there's some really good stuff. Nothing mind blowing OMG amazing though. I think the stuff you see in the best Miyazaki films is much much better.

Tetsuo's arm alone > most of that stuff. But, I digress.

I'd hate to take away from Miyazaki, who does make some rad films, but the level of crazy-ass technical stuff going on in Akira is still unmatched today. You should re-watch it.

and the bit with Kaneda running around dodging rocks after the orbital laser strike is still great!
