racist as shin and Drew describe them are real. They are just less vocal because it is no longer socially acceptable to go around hating minorities in that manner. Think of gay haters. Those people are just as real and they act on their hate. Its pretty common for a gay hating family to disown, kick out, and even abuse a family member for being gay. One day the person was a beloved son, the next, he is the evil spawn of satan.


Frankly, I think it would do the world a lot of good if we accepted the difference between racist and bigots. There are a lot of bigots out there, doing racist shit and hurting people, and cutting themselves slack because they aren't a racist. They tell themselves, "it is ok" because "hey, I love all those black guys at work."

We should move away from this idea that only racist are wrong, and accept that any bigoted behavior is wrong. Until you do that, bigots are going to cut themselves slack. Because "hey, at least I'm not in the klan"

Bigots are utterly intolerant. Racists are merely prejudiced, biased, and/or broadly discriminatory.

My choice of words is perfectly in sync with the dictionary definition. There are absolutely varying degrees of racism. Insisting otherwise won't make it so.

And I know extreme racists are real, but they're a very, very small minority, and one with absolutely no power outside of occasional criminal violence. They aren't the problem for most minorities in America.

It's the same way "rapist" doesn't have to be a guy who hides in the bushes waiting to jump out with a knife. That doesn't really happen that much and it marginalizes the problem to talk that way.

Yeah, one of my sisters is a hardcore racist of the sort who doesn't really understand that black people are even human (I don't think she's ever even had a conversation with a black person). I'm not saying these people don't exist, but racism is a much, much bigger problem than just this small minority of lunatics, most of whom are not really in any position to oppress or hurt anyone.
