It's not that I didn't like him, he was just like a baseline. Neutral. I found Tennant to be much, much better. Could just be that the writing got a bit better, too, but I think overall I liked him more. I even like Smith more.

My Backloggery
This is part of it. Tennant lucked out and got some of the better stories in the entire run of the show (Blink and Family of Blood both immediately come to mind). You could tell during that first season that the writers were still trying to find their collective voice, and the quality was inconsistent as a result. Eccleston also didn't stay in the role long enough to really establish himself. But neither of those things reflect on his acting or his portrayal of The Doctor. There hasn't been an incarnation before or since that was so emotionally raw or unpredictable. He would go from classic happy-go-lucky Doctor to seething with rage at the drop of a hat. That sort of quiet anger he often had was somehow far more terrible than Tennant's Doctor even at his most cruel. Imo, anyway.
