That finale rather perfectly summarized what was so great about this season (for my money, the strongest of all the reboot Who series): a renewed focus on properly developing characters in a way that's respectful to the entire Who canon while also packing a substantial emotional wallop without being hokey and overwrought. That scene at the end where Clara and the Doctor lie to one another about being happy to avoid hurting or worrying the other was particularly heartbreaking. Peter Capaldi is already my favorite of the post-2005 Doctors, and comes the closest to capturing the magic of the classic incarnations of the character; he's aloof, manipulative and alien in a way that immediately brings to mind Tom Baker and William Hartnell.
Also, I REALLY hope that isn't the last we see of Michelle Gomez's Master/Mistress, easily the most interesting take on the character since the original Roger Delgado version. That playful delight in her own insanity and ruthlessness is obviously inherited from Simm's portrayal, but it's thankfully reigned in and peppered with just the right amount of grudging respect for the Doctor and a desperate (and frankly kind of sad) desire to find common ground with him.
