This hits close to home for me. I have a 9 year old son, and he is starting to use the internet for certain things (funny youtube videos, gamefaqs etc), so the topic of him having an online presence is something I think about. That said, I've already started to caution him about how people act when they have the internet or Xbox Live to hide behind. He already knows that teenagers on XBL get pissed when they schooled by a 9yo. They hear his voice and go into instant attack mode. He realizes for the most part, if you just keep your mouth shut, you can save yourself a lot of grief. He doesn't even use the mic unless he is playing with actual friends. He also doesn't talk shit, sing into the mic or do any of the million other things that makes kids so obnoxious on XBL.
It's just a fact that teaching online common sense and etiquette are part of raising a child now. WAY too many parents either don't realize this, or are totally lacking of these skills themselves.
A lot of people don't have a strong understanding of the internet. A lot of people still use it for stuff like facebook and buying ring tones.
