Warren Ellis had a fantastic run on Excalibur. At least I remember it being fantastic. It might not seem quite so fantastic nowadays. But a lot of the stuff he does now was prototyped in that run.
I always liked the book.

The earliest Warren Ellis I remember reading was Doom 2099, I'll see about tracking down his Excalibur (I forgot about it!)
Doom 2099 was great until the rest of the line infected it and it fell apart over the last few issues. It was a beta-version Transmetropolitan.
If I recall correctly, his run started on part three of a three part story-shadow something or other. He went on to have the now overplayed but at the time pretty cool Heroes Go To Bar And Get Tanked issue as well as introducing Pete Wisdom, who pretty much every character he's created since is the proto for.
I was into stuff like Cry for Dawn and I, Lusipher at the time so my LCS guy said try this here Hellstorm comic. Ellis had just taken over and I loved it.
Been following him ever since through the couple of ups and lots and lots of downs.
